The Faculty

Message from the Dean

Dean of the Faculty of Humanities - Prof Vasu Reddy

Welcome to the University of Pretoria, and thanks for choosing UP! The Faculty of Humanities is one of the oldest faculties in South Africa – we celebrated 100 years in 2019. We have used our wealth of experience to develop a range of exciting opportunities for our students. We offer professional degrees in psychology, social work, communication pathology and audiology. We are also at the forefront of the arts, design, music and drama scenes thanks to our comprehensive School of the Arts and our newly launched Javett-UP Art Centre.

We know you share our interest in culture, people, politics and society. And our faculty can help you develop these interests and your ability to think both critically and laterally.

We are eager to explore new ideas with you!

Our faculty has a range of courses waiting for you to discover. You will learn to appreciate the role literature, heritage and culture, welfare, justice and equity play in our society. When you join our renowned faculty, we will challenge your imagination and grow your confidence so you can make an impact in your chosen career, your community, and in our country.

Yes, we teach some of the most influential thinkers in society, but we also care about your well-being as a student. This is THE UP WAY – we will nurture your intellectual curiosity and grow opportunities that will test your innovative spirit. Together we’ll help you graduate on time, and prepare you for the world that awaits!

So Choose UP, and we look forward to welcoming you next year.

Future Africa

Future Africa

The University of Pretoria’s Future Africa campus is the place where Africa’s leading scientists and scholars from across the world and from a broad range of disciplines come together to leverage the benefits of transdisciplinary research to address the grand challenges that face Africa and the world.

Issues of critical relevance to Africa are tackled: from sustainable development and good governance, citizen participation and human rights, to advancing innovation for the bioresource economy.

In a world where ideas and technologies evolve rapidly and the challenges we face are multifaceted and transnational, Africa needs a new generation of original thinkers with international perspectives, yet with a scholarly vision and voice that is rooted in Africa.

The Future Africa campus provides a dynamic living, learning and research environment where a community of scholars and other societal role players will engage to advance excellence in scholarship, dialogue and impact. Here the continent’s brightest young geneticists, chemists, economists, lawyers, engineers, social scientists and other specialists are able to work side by side in an environment that facilitates world-class creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.
