Welcome to our international students

The University of Pretoria is set in the heart of South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria. We’re surrounded by the diplomatic corps of countries from across the world. In fact, Pretoria hosts the second-highest number of diplomatic missions in the world.

As such, UP attracts thousands of students from more than 100 countries across the world. We are a world-class university with many exchange programmes for students, and internationally collaborative research projects for academics. Our campuses are diverse and dynamic spaces where many different local and international cultures find a home. Our international students get ongoing comprehensive support from the International Cooperation Division (ICD) in the Department of Research and Innovation (DRI). The ICD also provides guidance and advice on immigration and visa matters. The ICD also helps international students secure UP accommodation or UP-accredited accommodation and advises them on how to obtain South African medical aid.

Other Postgraduate Interests

Accommodation

UP provides postgraduate accommodation for approximately 1 ,200 students, but due to limited space, it is important to apply early. Applications for postgraduate residences open in March for prospective students and at the start of the second semester for current students. Only those applying for or enrolled in a postgraduate study programme can apply. Prospective students can indicate their interest in residences during their initial application, while current students can apply through the UP- Student Portal. Placement is not guaranteed, as demand exceeds availability, and all applicants are placed on a waiting list.

Postgraduate residences offer single-room facilities with shared common areas, and limited bachelor units are available. If you have specific accommodation needs due to a disability, please indicate this during the application process, and the UP Disability Unit and Department of Residence Affairs and Accommodation will work together to accommodate you. Private accredited accommodation is also an option, as the University cannot guarantee residence placement due to high demand.
